About St Austell

The lively market town of St Austell is situated in Cornwall, England. St Austell is Cornwall’s largest town and is often referred to as the ‘Capital of the Cornish Alps’ because of the surrounding snowy-white mountains that make up St Austell’s beautiful landscape. St Austell boasts ethereal natural beauty because it lies at the junction of the three picturesque valleys of Pentewan, Bodmin and Grover.

A Brief History of St Austell

The town of St Austell was named after ‘St Austol’, a Cornish saint, and has a rich mining history. Copper and tin was discovered here by early settlers and were St Austell’s main industries for quite a while. However, it was after the remarkable discovery and development of china-clay (previously only found in northern China) by William Cookworthy in 1755, that St Austell prospered enormously. Clay mining took over as the town’s main industry from then on. Even today, St Austell exports china-clay, which is used in the production of paint, paper and pharmaceutical drugs.

Modern-day St Austell
